STATE OF THE NEW 2012 TRI STAR HOUSE

The construction class continues to work on the 2012 Tri Star house project. As you can see, much of the exterior work is done. During the winter months the students continue work on the interior. They are currently installing insulation, plumbing, dry wall, and electric. The project is on schedule and should be completed by the end of the school year. The house is set to be sold at public auction in June.

Instructors were busy Monday night talking with prospective students and their parents during Tri Star’s annual open house. Attendees could check out 15 different career technical programs in Coldwater, Celina, Montezuma and St. Marys. Instructors and current Tri Star students shared information with visitors about class expectations and requirements and college and career opportunities. Students interested in enrolling in a program, should submit an application to their counselor guidance no later than January 18, 2012. Applications may be downloaded from this website, picked up in the high school guidance offices or the Tri Star office at 585 E. Livingston St., Celina. Tri Star house is sold!

The Tri Star house built by the construction class of 2011 has been sold. The home is located at 1604 Oxford Drive in the Reserves Subdivision in Celina.

The 2012 construction class is currently working on building another house in the same subdivision. Please check back for details on their house which will be sold at auction in June.

Lochtefeld Wins UNOH Scholarship

Eric Loctefeld took first place in the Networking Systems scholarship test held at the University of Northwestern Ohio. As the top scorer, Eric will receive a full tuition scholarship toward an Associate’s degree at UNOH. Eric, a senior from Celina, is currently enrolled in Tri Star’s Business Management program taught by Lynne Ray and as a junior he was a student in Tri Star’s Network Systems program taught by Richard Murray.

Helping Angels

Tri Star’s Dennings Building students volunteered recently with the Mercer County Angel Tree Program. The Welding, Med Prep, Precision Machining, and Electronics students helped unload and sort truckloads of donations to be given away. These students were among a number of other volunteers who helped organize the donations for this annual program that helps Mercer County families. Prior to working at the church, these students raised $3,007.84 which was used to purchase clothing and toys for the angel tree program.

Thanksgiving Meal Fundraiser and Canned Food Drive

The Senior Med Prep class held their annual Thanksgiving luncheon fundraiser on Wed., Nov. 26 at the Dennings Building in St. Marys. The students donated and prepared all of the usual fixin’s for a Thanksgiving meal including home baked desserts. Administrators from a variety of Tri Star’s associate high schools, area business partners, and Tri Star staff and students converged on the Med Prep classroom and enjoyed the feast. The money raised will be used to support the Angel Tree program of Mercer County.

The SkillsUSA Club, at the Dennings Building, also held a canned food drive for the St. Marys Agape Food Pantry in Auglaize County, during the month of November. This year junior and senior students, from the Med Prep, Electronics, Precision Machining and Welding programs, collected a total of 3861 items which were delivered the week prior to the Thanksgiving fundraiser.

A Powerpoint presentation provided facts regarding the philanthropic efforts at the Dennings Building.

Horticulture Adopts a Wetland and Partners with University of Findlay

Tri Star’s Senior Horticulture program has adopted over 300 wetland plants and developed a wetland in their greenhouse. The plants were removed from Grand Lake and placed in the greenhouse where the Horticulture students will be testing water quality effects on plant growth and the plants ability to absorb various nutrients. Aquatic wetland plants absorb great amounts of phosphorous which is the main nutrient of concern. The students will also experience the practical applications of how wetland plants benefit our environment and their effect on water quality. The class will be partnering with the University of Findlay and their Environmental Research Studies program. This partnership will provide the students additional information and equipment which will benefit their research studies. At the conclusion of their study, Tri Star students will share their findings with the University of Findlay personnel. The students hope to gain a better understanding of the benefits of wetland plants in aquatic environments. This spring the plants will be returned to an appropriate location on Grand Lake under the direction of Dennis Riethman, Tri Star’s Horticulture teacher.

And The Winner Is …

Janae Evers, a senior in the Graphic Communications program, created the winning design for the Tri Star catalog cover this year. Her design was selected from approximately 40 that were submitted from the junior and senior graphics classes. Six designs were selected as semi-finalists out of the 40 submissions and current Tri Star students were asked to vote for their top choice. Semi-finalists included: (junior) Kelsey Prenger and (seniors) Megan Wiegant, Devon Coil and Isabella Tingler. As the winner, Janae’s design is printed on the Tri Star catalogs that are distributed to area sophomores, guidance counselors and the public. She also received a $25 gift card for her efforts.

8th Graders Tour Programs

The month of October has been busy for Tri Star teachers and their students as they have been hosting area 8^th graders for tours of their classes. Celina, Coldwater, Fort Recovery, Marion Local, Minster, New Bremen, New Knoxville, St. Henry and St. Marys 8^th graders visited 14 different career technical programs. The tour is used to introduce students to Tri Star and to help them explore a variety of career fields. The 8^th graders spent ten minutes in each program, and were encouraged to bring their parents to the Tri Star Open House on Monday, January 9, 2012 to learn more. The students visited Ag. Mechanics, Horticulture and Vet Tech programs in Coldwater. In St. Marys, they learned about Med Prep, Electronics, Precision Machining and Welding programs. In Celina, they toured Business Management, Early Childhood, Interactive Media, and Graphics programs at the Education Complex and Engineering Technology/CAD, Automotive Technology programs at Celina High School. They were also treated to a stop at the site of the new Tri Star house where the construction class is building a new single-family home.
