Outstanding Students Honored at Banquet

Tri Star Career Compact held its annual banquet, Monday, May 14^th , to honor outstanding students in each of its 16 career technical programs. One junior and one senior, in each program, is chosen by their instructor and/or peers to receive this award based on such qualities as dependability, leadership, academic excellence, maturity, growth in the program, participation in student organizations, volunteerism, professionalism and character.

Jon Clouse, Tri Star’s Engineering Technology/ C.A.D. (computer assisted drafting) instructor was also recognized at the banquet. Clouse is retiring at the end of this school year. He has been teaching and coaching for 35 years. He began his career as an industrial arts teacher, but has been the only C.A.D. instructor Tri Star has had since Tri Star was established.

AIA DAYTON ANNOUNCES ART IN ARCHITECTURE STUDENT DESIGN WINNERS

On Tuesday, April 24, the American Institute of Architects, Dayton Chapter (AIA Dayton) announced the winners of its 29^th annual ‘Art in Architecture Student Design Competition. AIA Dayton was founded in 1900 and represents a nine-county membership of approximately 200 architects.

Fifty students from nine Miami Valley counties competed for $2000 in scholarships and prizes. The competition is open to college-bound high school students, grades 9 through 12 from Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Logan, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, and Shelby Counties who are interested in art, architecture, and design.

In partnership with the AIAS Student Chapter of Miami University, Heapy Engineering, the Masonry Institute of Dayton, and Life Basics, Inc., students were asked to design a bakery as a fictional project for Cake, Hope & Love Bakery of Beavercreek. The students received assistance with the project from their high school advisors as well as a team of AIA designers.

Tri Star students that entered the contest (bottom picture, l to r) included: Clune from St. Henry, and Jay Heyne and Miranda Sutter from Celina. All three are enrolled in Tri Star’s Engineering Technology/CAD program instructed by Jon Clouse who also served as their advisor for the competition.

2012 Med Prep Pinning Ceremony

On April 17, 2012, Tri Star Career Compact’s’ Med Prep Program held their annual Pinning Ceremony for graduating seniors at the St. Marys Denning’s Building. The purpose of the ceremony was to recognize the seniors for their many accomplishments and award each of them a caduceus pin signifying their entrance into the medical field. The students also received a career passport which included a comprehensive list of the medical skills acquired throughout the two years in the program including CPR/First Aid training, Anatomy/Physiology and many hours of hands-on medical practice. The students also spent an average of four weeks of observations in many area health care facilities.

The junior Med Prep Students and Tri Star Staff would like to extend congratulations to the seniors on their accomplishments!

Mercer County Tri Star Students Advance to National Competition

On Wednesday, April 25, two Mercer County Tri Star students will depart for Chicago, where they will be attending Business Professionals of America’s National Leadership Conference. Joey Knapke, Coldwater, won first place in state competition for Banking and Finance, and MacKenzie Rosselet, St. Henry won first place in the state for her prepared speech.

“Normally, we’ll have one or two students qualify for Nationals each year, but I don’t think we’ve ever had a winner who received first place at the state competition. This year, we’re thrilled to have two first place winners” said Mrs. Lynne Ray, BPA advisor.

The students will be accompanied by Mrs. Ray. Conference activities will include business and leadership seminars, workshops, open testing to showcase their knowledge of business related topics, and their individual business skills competitions, where they will compete against BPA students from all over the United States.

BPA advisor Lisa Sheppard took the group of BPA regional winners, including Knapke and Rosselet, to the State Leadership Conference last month.

“We always have a strong showing of local students who advance to State,” said Mrs. Sheppard, “Our students excel in a variety of the competitions, thanks in part to the strong backgrounds in education that they have received from their home schools and their parents.”

Students who qualified for state level competition included: Tre Billger and Cassie Orick, Celina, for Payroll Accounting; Candace Creamer, Celina, for Spreadsheet Applications; Joey Knapke, Coldwater, for Banking and Finance; Nichole Bricher, Coldwater, for Advanced Office Systems; Cody Link, St. Henry, and Cassie Springer, Celina, for Legal Office Procedures; David Ebright, Celina, for Microsoft Network Administration; Aloha Pfeifer, Coldwater, for Administrative Support Research; Eric Lochtefeld, Celina, and Randy Albers, St. Henry, for Computer Network Technology; Dereck Slusser and Robert McNew, Celina, for Web Design, and MacKenzie Rosselet, St. Henry, for Prepared Speech.

Business Professionals of America is a national organization for high school, college, and middle school students preparing for careers in business and information technology. Tri Star’s BPA students are enrolled in Business Management, taught by Mrs. Ray, or Interactive Media, taught by Mrs. Sheppard.

2012 TRI STAR HOUSE – OPEN HOUSE

Senior construction students, who will be graduating in less than a month, are working hard to complete their 2012 house project in time for the house to be sold at auction June 7th. Students are tackling a variety of details that are needed to get the house ready for a new home owner, including exterior work, with brick and decorative siding on the front, and interior work with baseboard trim, countertops, electrical fixtures and carpeting. Junior construction students are providing assistance with the project and when complete, the public will be able to purchase the 1,750 square foot single- family home. Interested buyers can view the home, prior to the auction, at one of the upcoming open houses or they may call the Tri Star office for a private tour. The house is located at 1615 Oxford Drive in the Reserves Subdivision (Celina, OH). The Reserves Subdivision can be found on the east side of Celina off of Wayne St./S.R. 197.

Directions: From the football stadium follow Wayne St./S.R. 197east past Grand Lake Road about one-half mile to Berkshire Drive, turn left on Berkshire into the subdivision and left onto Oxford Drive. You will find the house located on the right.

Tri Star students recently attended the Ohio SkillsUSA Southwest Championships to compete in regional skill contests. Seven seniors and one junior will be moving on to the state level competition April 27-28 at the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus.

Med Prep seniors Kaitlyn Lehmkuhl, Brittany Sudhoff, Marie Bertke and Abigail Schlarman competed in the Health Knowledge Bowl (HKB) and won a gold medal. The HKB tests the knowledge of four-member teams on the core standards from the National Health Care Core Skill Standards. The HKB team’s advisor is Janet Nelson.

Sean Mertz, a senior in Tri Star’s Engineering Technology program, competed in the Engineering Technology/Technical Drafting competition and also earned a gold medal. Advisor and instructor for Engineering Technology is Jon Clouse.

Earning bronze medals were Justin Hilgeford for Computer Maintenance Technology and Devin Froning who competed in Precision Machining Technology. Justin is a senior in Tri Star’s Electronics program and Devin is a junior in the Precision Machining program. Jason Guggenbiller, a senior in Electronics will compete at the state level in the Electronics Technology contest. The Electronics advisor is Jerry Kohnen and Rob Menker is the advisor for Precision Machining.

Early Childhood/FCCLA Students Earn Gold Medals

Eleven juniors and one senior, from Tri Star’s Early Childhood Program, competed at the regional FCCLA contests held at Ft. Recovery High School on March 3^rd. All twelve qualified with gold medals for the state competition in Columbus on April 19 & 20.

New Bremen student, Jeremy Kemmann and his family stopped by the Tri Star booth Monday night during New Bremen High School’s Open House. This freshman has his sights set on Tri Star’s Engineering Technology/CAD program when he is eligible. We are excited that he has already begun making preparations by asking questions and taking the necessary academic classes he needs to be successful in the program.

We look forward to seeing Jeremy at Tri Star in the future!!

Mercer County Spring Home Show

We would like to thank all of the nice people who stopped by our booth at the Mercer County Spring Home Show March 3^rd and 4^th.

A special “thank you” goes to Elliott Keller, a 7^th grader from Fort Recovery, who plans to be a Tri Star Med Prep student when she is in high school. She was visiting the home show, with her family, and made it a point to stop by our booth and express her interest in medical careers. We look forward to having her join us in a few years!!
