Automotive Technology is a two-year NATEF/ASE certified program for students who want to work in the vehicle service industry. It is a College Tech Prep program. This course covers the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of cars, trucks and other vehicles. Junior students develop skills through hands-on experience with gasoline combustion engines, automotive service and brake work. Seniors will study automotive technology in greater depth including servicing electrical systems, engine performance, suspension and steering, and heating and air conditioning.
Seniors will have the opportunity to job shadow after the first nine weeks and may participate in early placement the last nine weeks of the school year if they qualify.
Students develop skills in the following areas:
• Hand, power, measuring tools and safety
• Engine assemblies and overhaul
• Automotive service work
• Brake system service
• Electrical system troubleshooting and service
• Fuel system/fuel injection
• Suspension/steering/wheel alignment
• Advanced electrical/electronics
• On-board computer diagnostics
• Heating/air conditioning
Training in the Automotive program includes the use of late model automobiles and engines, brake lathes, tire changers/balancers, computerized test scan tools, 4 wheel alignment machines, digital multimeters, lifts/hoists, computerized database diagnostic information retrieval, AND air conditioning/recovery recycling.
