Med Prep juniors are studying types of bacteria – with candy no less! Med Prep instructor, Brenda Speck, helps students understand what bacteria structures are like by using candy that has the same shape. Speck explains, “Some bacteria are simple circular shapes like M&M’s, but how they are put together determines that type of bacteria - pairs are diplococci, chains of bacteria are strep, staph are clusters. Once the student has used the candy to determine the type of bacteria … they draw the shape, then they get to eat the candy. Eating the “bacteria” simulates antibiotics which treat bacterial infections. ” The lesson is fun, delicious and another way students learn without having to study from a book.
